Blushmartini5 Hello Friday! The perfect reason to mix some cocktails and welcome the weekend. My favourite spring cocktail is the Blushing Kiss Martini, and not simply because of its cute name. Fruity grapefruit, fresh rosemary and Lillet are the best companion for spring weekends. I’ll drink to that, cheers and happy weekend!

Blushmartini Ingredients (makes 1 cocktail):

  • 1 part Gin
  • 1 part Lillet
  • 2 parts grapefruit juice
  • 1 tsp simple syrup
  • grapefruit wedge
  • 1 sprig of rosemary

Blushmartini2 1. Shake all ingredients (add ice, if you like to)  and pour through a fine strainer into a Martini glass. Garnish with grapefruit wedge and rosemary. Happy Friday!

If you have been a teenager in the 1990s, you remember wearing a flowing floral dress paired with Doc Martens and an oversized denim jacket. I wouldn’t necessarily copy that exact outfit again, but looking back, the ’90s actually were a great decade in terms of style: minimalism, oversized pieces, a bit of grunge and everything from GAP was mainly what mattered. Obviously, I’ve made mistakes, big mistakes like platform sandals, neon coloured scrunchies, butterfly hair clips and fanny packs. But lately, a lot of my favourite ’90s fashions have come back and I am happy to finally pull some items out of the back of my closet. Here are the pieces I can’t wait to reunite with and how to style them now.

White dinnerware goes with everything and is the perfect foundation for an elegant and artful dinner party. It’s easy to create a table setting that expresses your style and complements your room’s decor by simply adding little accessories: Colourful napkins and flowers, golden and silver accents or just let it stand for itself and leave the focus on the food. All-white is a bit boring, you might say, but it’s all in the little details…

CityGuideMunich
How to describe Munich to someone who has never been?

Munich and its people are very traditional and easy going. You’ll see people in traditional costumes – dirndl and lederhosen – not only during Oktoberfest season and the clocks seem to tick a bit slower in this beautiful city. On the contrary, there’s a blooming and vibrant international art and music scene. You might feel an Italian impact, since we are so close to Italy and Munich is often called the northernmost city of Italy.

Which are the places in Munich that everyone should visit?
That’s easy, you’ll just have to go to the city centre (Marienplatz) and visit the old court house and the Frauenkirche. Stroll over Viktualienmarkt and walk towards Odeonsplatz with the Residenz, the Hofgarten and Theatinerkirche.

What are the best restaurants here?
There are some great casual dining spots around the city where you just order Italian or Spanish tapas with your glass of wine. My favourite is Mezzodi in the Haidhausen quarter or the more lively Palau in the Glockenbach area. The Burger House is a good alternative. For date night I’d prefer something more fancy like French-bistro-style Chez Fritz to share a seafood platter or modern-eastern Kismet. Want to impress with the best steak in town, go to Theresa or with excellent Japanese food, go to Emiko.

And the best bar?
For great cocktails and cool designed interior: Bar Reichenbach, Bar FantomCortiina Bar
For great cocktails and wise bartenders: Goldene Bar, Barroom, Schumann’s and Pusser’s

Where to go if you feel like dancing with friends?
Call me Drella if you prefer it chic and Paradiso if you like it a bit extravagant.

Best café?
Literary salon, bookshop, art gallery, coffee shop – all in one: Lost Weekend
Sitting outside and watching people café-house-style: Tambosi
You rather wear sneakers and eat healthy snacks: Aromabar
Sweet tooth? Try out Götterspeise or Maelu for the best macarons in town
Shabby chic and crafting is totally yours? Café Marais

Pre-dinner drinks?
You might have heard of it, we love champagne and Sprizz here in Munich. Preferably before dinner, watching the sun go down over Munich. Best places: The rooftop terrace of hotel Bayerischer Hof or, for the student at heart, the Vorhoelzer Forum. For the Italien experience go to lively Bar Centrale.

Where to eat the best and typical roast pork?
With the theatre crowd in a glamorous surrounding at Spaten or in one of the many beergardens, Seehaus in the English Garden is my favourite.

The best park to spend an afternoon in?
Picnic in the huge English Garden or stroll through the Hofgarten to feel like an ancient princess.

For a little culture?
My favourite is the Brandhorst Museum, the Cy Twombly collection is a must-see. Also go to Haus der Kunst (changing exhibitions), Lenbachhaus and the Pinakotheken.

Which are the most interesting neighborhoods and why?
Glockenbach because of the modern, young and arty vibe. Stroll around Gärtnerplatz and explore the little boutiques, cafés and bars. For a more quiet place visit the beautiful cemetary Südfriedhof. And Haidhausen around Wiener Platz; chic boutiques and cafés circle surround the little market stands.

What is the best souvenir someone can buy in Munich?
Chocolate truffles from Dallmayr and pretzels.

Where is the best spot for people watching?
Schumann’s Bar and Brenner Grill.

Describe the coolest stores here…
Munich has got a few chic concept stores: My favourite stores are Slips (Carven, MSGM, Equipment) and Nicole Mohrmann. Schwittenberg (Isabel Marant Etoile, Acne Studios) is for fancy clothing and Apropos for the guys. Department store Ludwig Beck has the best beauty selection you can find in the city. If you want to opt for delicatessen, you’ll love Dallmayr. For extraordinary jewelry and extraordinary store design you shouldn’t miss House of Capulet and minimalistic jewelry designer Saskia Diez‘s pieces.
If you simply like strolling I’d recommend Hohenzollernstrasse in the student quarter Schwabing, which offers lots of smaller stores.

How to get around Munich?
The city is not very big, therefore a bike is the perfect way to get around.

Is there a hotel to recommend to friends ?
The Cortiina hotel or hotel Lux.

Where to go for a day trip outside of Munich?
The Alps and lakes are only an hour from Munich. Go to Tegernsee for a little hike, take a swim in the lake and have a cold beer at the Bräustüberl. Or explore Ettal and Ludwig II. fairy-tale Linderhof Castle.

Describe the perfect day in Munich…
Spoil yourself and start the day with an oyster-and-champagne-brunch at Dallmayr at the lively oyster bar in the food court and watch sophisticated Munich ladies in hats and fur running their errands. Stroll towards Odeonsplatz, get a coffee-to-go at Starbucks and sit in the sun on one of the benches in the Hofgarten. Watch the surfers at the Eisbach, yes, Munich is something of a surfing hotspot. Walk back to Viktualienmarkt and buy everything fresh for dinner. Enjoy the sunset and an aperitif from the Bayerischer Hof rooftop terrace before heading home to prepare dinner or to go out.

What is important to know?
1. You should make reservations in advance! It can be very frustrating to look for a table spontaneously on a weekend.
2. If you would like to try a Bavarian veal sausage make sure to do so before noon, they might not be served afterwards.
3. The Oktoberfest is fun, but honestly, highly overrated.

valentinescard3

I have to admit, I am a bit indecisive about Valentine’s Day. Some like the idea of having an occasion to show your loved ones how much you love them, others feel like it is a day created by the chocolate industry to spend money on sweets and flowers. I believe, even though we surely can show our loved ones how we feel every day, a little hint to demonstrate our love isn’t the worst idea. This year I opted for simple self-made Valentine’s cards. Little gestures and sweet words, that’s what Valentine’s Day means to me. And all you need, except for your own words, is paper, a pen, lipstick, a candle and some creativity. Spread the love!

lentils2 I have discovered my new favourite salad ingredient for winter: Beluga lentils. Lentils are probably the most underestimated beans, no wonder, they are mostly known for thick, overkooked stews. However, mixed cold in a salad with fresh ingredients and a light dressing, lentils open up a whole new world of taste. Try out this delicious salad with the best, winter has to offer: Beluga lentils, cranberries, caramelised nuts, spinach and pomegranate.

lentils1 You’ll need (serves 4):

  • 2 cups cooked Beluga lentils
  • 2 cups chopped fresh baby spinach
  • 1 cup pomegranate arils
  • 1/2 cup dried cranberries
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp pomegranate syrup (alternatively honey and pomegranate Juice)
  • 2 tbsp white wine vinegar
  • a pinch of salt and pepper

lentils3

1. Bring honey to a boil in a small saucepan over moderate heat, stirring until honey  is dissolved. Pour over nuts and stir until nuts are well coated and roast, stirring occasionally, until golden brown.

2. Toss nuts together with other ingredients and serve immediately.

SSjewel outfit

I am a big fan of this season’s jewel tones, in my home as much as in my closet. I fell in love with the colour combination navy and dark green, especially; these two colours perfectly complement each other and effortlessly create a sophisticated, cool and classy look without being as formal as black. Swedish Fashion-blogger Ellen Claesson brings the colour combination to perfection with her minimalistic winter look. The different textures, the classic details like thin silver rings, the classic Céline Trio-bag or the pointy loafers, complete the casual but chic look, I want to steal immediately.

Apps for busy girls I find myself wondering “Isn’t there an app for that?” in lots of situations; between meetings,  yoga classes, dinner reservations and managing a social life, it’s pretty hard for a woman on-the-go to keep up with life’s demands. And yes, thanks to the smartphone and technology, there are lots of helpful apps that do a pretty good job of keeping us aligned. Make your busy life managable with the help of these apps that every young savvy woman should have on her device. At least they made my life a lot easier!

AroundMe:
This business traveler’s lifesaver finds the nearest café, pharmacy, gas station, dry cleaner, or bar anywhere in the world, then maps a route for you.

Evernote:
I love lists. Whether it’s making a work to-do list, planning a dinner party or tracking future topics to write about, lists definitely keep my life organized. And doesn’t it feel good to scratch things off on a list?! With Evernote, you can keep track of your life through recordings, notes, pictures, and categorize and organize it all.

Mint:
Mint is an awesome financial planning and management app that allows you to track your spending, set budgets, and find out when bills are due. With credit and debit cards, keeping track of spending can easily get out of hand. Mint will let you know if that new pair of heels you have been eyeing will either break the bank or be totally worth the money!

DinnerSpinner:
For those of you in a time crunch or not so well-versed in the kitchen, DinnerSpinner is a great app. Got only 20 minutes to whip something together before your friends come over and you have no idea what to make? Plug in your ingredients, the dish type, and how long you want to spend on it, and presto! Recipes at your fingertips!

NIKE Training Club:
There are a multitude of fitness apps on the market. However, Nike Training Club encompasses all your workout needs. The app features cardio, core, strength, balance, and flexibility exercises, workout videos, a training schedule, and even allows you to create your own workouts.

Stylebook:
Despite your closet full of clothes, sometimes you still don’t know what to wear? Stylebook’s virtual closet app allows you to manage everything from your favorite outfits to your sizes and style inspirations by taking pictures of your items and uploading them. It’s great for packing a suitcase and totally worth the time it takes in the first step and the 3,99€ (ok, I have been cheating here, it’s not free)!

Dragon Dictation:
Converts your spoken words into texts, e-mails, even facebook status updated and tweets. Surprisingly accurate and fast.

Baby, it’s cold outside! Time to spend more time at home, cuddled in a blanket with a good book and a hot cup of tea where it’s warm and cosy. I’d love to have an open fireplace or maybe a little cabin in the mountains, please? Since Santa did not bring me such an alpine chalet, I do my best to achieve a cosy but modern chalet look with the help of fur blankets, knitted accessories and lots of deer. Turn your home into a modern winter retreat with just a few inexpensive accessories.

In Not That Kind of Girl, Dunham illuminates the experiences that are part of making one’s way in the world: falling in love, feeling alone, being ten pounds overweight despite eating only health food, having to prove yourself in a room full of men twice your age, finding true love, and most of all, having the guts to believe that your story is one that deserves to be told. Exuberant, moving, and keenly observed, Not That Kind of Girl is a series of dispatches from the frontlines of the struggle that is growing up.

Ariel de Ravenel: Loulou de la Falaise

Sheryl Sandberg: Lean In – Women, Work, and the Will to Lead
Thirty years after women became 50 percent of the college graduates in the United States, men still hold the vast majority of leadership positions in government and industry. In Lean In, Sheryl Sandberg examines why women’s progress in achieving leadership roles has stalled, explains the root causes, and offers compelling, commonsense solutions that can empower women to achieve their full potential.

Sandberg is the chief operating officer of Facebook and is ranked on Fortune’s list of the 50 Most Powerful Women in Business and as one of Time’s 100 Most Influential People in the World .

In Lean In, Sandberg recounts her own decisions, mistakes, and daily struggles to make the right choices for herself, her career, and her family. She provides practical advice on negotiation techniques, mentorship, and building a satisfying career, urging women to set boundaries and to abandon the myth of “having it all.”

Written with both humor and wisdom, Sandberg’s book is an inspiring call to action and a blueprint for individual growth.

Diane von Fürstenberg: The Woman I Wanted to Be
One of the most influential, admired, and innovative women of our time: fashion designer, philanthropist, wife, mother, and grandmother, Diane von Furstenberg offers a book about becoming the woman she wanted to be.

Diane von Furstenberg started out with a suitcase full of jersey dresses and an idea of who she wanted to be—in her words, “the kind of woman who is independent and who doesn’t rely on a man to pay her bills.” She has since become that woman, establishing herself as a global brand and a major force in the fashion industry, all the while raising a family and maintaining “my children are my greatest creation.” In The Woman I Wanted to Be, von Furstenberg reflects on her extraordinary life—from childhood in Brussels to her days as a young, jet-set princess, to creating the dress that came to symbolize independence and power for an entire generation of women. With remarkable honesty and wisdom, von Furstenberg mines the rich territory of what it means to be a woman. She opens up about her family and career, overcoming cancer, building a global brand, and devoting herself to empowering other women, writing, “I want every woman to know that she can be the woman she wants to be.”

Sophia Amoruso: #GIRLBOSS
The first thing Sophia Amoruso sold online wasn’t fashion—it was a stolen book. She spent her teens hitchhiking, committing petty theft, and dumpster diving. By twenty-two, she had resigned herself to employment, but was still broke, directionless, and working a mediocre day job she’d taken for the health insurance. It was there that Sophia decided to start selling vintage clothes on eBay. Eight years later, she is the founder, CEO, and creative director of Nasty Gal, a $100 million plus online fashion retailer with more than 350 employees. Sophia’s never been a typical CEO, or a typical anything, and she’s written #GIRLBOSS for outsiders (and insiders) seeking a unique path to success, even when that path is winding as all hell and lined with naysayers.

As Sophia writes, “I have three pieces of advice I want you to remember: Don’t ever grow up. Don’t become a bore. Don’t let The Man get to you. OK? Cool.  Then let’s do this.”
